Koke: Georgia loss won´t affect Spain at Euro 2016

Koke believes Spain s shock loss to Georgia in their final warm-up friendly for Euro 2016 will not affect the two-time defending champions heading into the tournament.

A first-half goal from Tornike Okriashvili saw Georgia claim a 1-0 win over Spain at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in Getafe on Tuesday.

The loss came less than a week after they defeated South Korea 6-1 courtesy of doubles from Alvaro Morata and Nolito.

However, Koke insists the Georgia defeat will have no effect on double-defending champions Spain as they contest Group D alongside the Czech Republic, Turkey and Croatia.

We are the same. We continue with the same atmosphere and we are raring to train and play our first game, the Atletico Madrid midfielder said.

The other day…

2022 World Cup should remain in Qatar, says bid chief

Qatar 2022 World Cup committee secretary general Hassan al-Thawadi has rejected suggestions that the tournament should be moved elsewhere.

The Middle East country won the right to host the event in December 2010, beating off competition from the likes of the United States, Japan, South Korea and Australia.

But since then, doubts have been raised over the viability of staging the tournament in the traditional months of June and July, due to the oppressive weather in the region at that time of year with average temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius.

FIFA have hinted that they may now consider moving the timing of the tournament – something that Al-Thawadi has previously said he would be open to – but the head of the 2022 World Cup also says there is no reason…

Del Bosque cautious ahead of Euro 2012

Vicente del Bosque will be guarding against complacency when Spain open the defence of their European crown against Italy on June 10.

The Spain head coach says his players need to forget their success and concentrate on winning their third consecutive major tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

Spain followed up their victory at the 2008 European Championships by winning the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Del Bosque believes several of the top teams such as Italy, England and France will make it difficult for his side having failed to impress in recent tournaments.

As good players, (it is important) everything that happened in the last European Cup and World Cup does not affect us, because it is important to have excitement for a championship like the Eur…

Liverpool 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Talking points as Reds bid Klopp farewell with deserved victory

The 2023/24 Premier League season is over, and in the final round, Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers by 2-0 at Anfield, courtesy of goals from Alexis Mac Allister in the 34th minute and Jarell Quansah in the 40th. The Reds job was made a little easier by a reckless moment from Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo, who earned a straight red card for foul on Mac Allister, six minutes before the Argentina international scored the opening goal.

But with the points from this game meaning very little for either side going into it, the focus of every home fan inside the iconic venue was on bidding farewell to Jurgen Klopp, who sat in the Anfield dugout for the last time.

Klopp s farewell

Klopp succeeded Brendan Rodgers as the Liverpool manager back in October 2015. At the tim…

Wembley to host more than 60,000 fans for Euro 2020 semi-finals and final

Wembley has been given the green light to host more than 60,000 spectators for the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final next month.

The showpiece fixtures were initially set to be attended by around 45,000 fans, but approximately 75 per cent of the ground will now be filled.

It will be the largest crowd assembled for a sporting event in the United Kingdom in 15 months.

Tuesday s announcement comes a day after Italy s prime minister Mario Draghi called on UEFA to stage the games in Rome, while Budapest had been touted as another alternative.

However, the British government has struck an agreement with UEFA to ensure that all three matches will still be played at Wembley.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement: It is great news that so m…

Euro 2008 day seven – Italy 1-1 Romania, Holland 4-1 France.

The seventh day of Euro 2008 produced two games of the highest quality. The games were a joy to watch and gave a perfect example of why we call football, ‘the beautiful game’.

The first game saw Italy fighting for survival in the competition after their comprehensive defeat at the hands of the Dutch. They knew that another defeat here, against Romania, would mean them seeing their friends and family again a little sooner than they would have hoped.

Romania, on the other hand would have been buoyed by their draw against France and were seriously looking at how they might be the surprise qualifiers from the so called ‘group of death’.

After watching Romania play in an organised, somewhat defensive way a…

Andorra 0 Portugal 2: Rested Ronaldo the saviour for Euro 2016 champions

Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench to keep Portugal s hopes of automatic World Cup qualification alive, breaking the deadlock in a hard-fought 2-0 win away to Andorra in Group B.

Ronaldo, one booking away from a suspension, was named among the substitutes on Saturday by coach Fernando Santos ahead of the crunch clash against Switzerland on Tuesday.

But, after a goalless first half, Santos was forced to turn to his star man and risk Ronaldo getting a yellow card that would see him missing that crucial concluding fixture.

The Real Madrid superstar thrived on the pressure by scoring his 15th goal of the qualifying campaign to draw level with Poland s prolific Robert Lewandowski 18 minutes after his introduction, poking in a Joao Mario cross from close range.
